Program Description:

The M.F.A. program in playwriting is designed for those interested in playwriting as well as those who want an academic study of theatre with the playscript as the central foundation. This unique summer program, with its emphasis on both scholarly research and creative writing, will enable graduates of the program to: write and articulate clear, perceptive, and informed analyses of dramatic texts; produce dramatic works of the highest quality; pursue careers in such professions as dramatic writing, dramaturgy, literary management, and arts instruction. Hollins offers an intensive, supportive, and challenging atmosphere that encourages academic excellence, a spirit of independent inquiry, a free exchange of ideas, and a love of learning.

The program's instructors include Hollins permanent faculty as well as visiting theatre professionals, established writers, and distinguished scholars from other institutions. All of our instructors work together to help students achieve their academic, professional, and artistic goals.

A total of sixty credits are required for the MFA in Playwriting. Candidates for the degree take courses in the following focus areas: Critical Analysis, Creative Writing Workshops, Advanced Writing Workshops, Playwright's Laboratory, and Thesis. Generally students will take a total of three courses each summer.

Students have the opportunity to actively participate in events that showcase their talent during their enrollment. Students also benefit from a regular program of visiting theatre professionals from around the world who give presentations, readings, lectures, and conduct writing exercises.

There is no language requirement for the MFA, but students are required to pass a final comprehensive exam.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants to the program must have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. They must submit undergraduate transcripts, writing samples, and three letters of recommendation in addition to the application form and processing fee.

International Student Requirements:

In addition to the application requirements for all students, international students who are not native speakers of the English language are required to submit the TOEFL test scores and the proficiency in English form. Additionally, all international students are required to submit the Certification of Finances form indicating their ability to pay tuition, fees, housing, and other expenses related to the program and their course of study.
