MHA - Masters in Health Administration

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) degree is the most widely recognized administrative and management credential in the private and public sectors of the U.S. health services system. Hofstra University is the one of the few universities to offer the M.H.A. degree in New York City and surrounding suburban counties, as well as being affiliated with the accrediting body, AUPHA (Association of University Programs in Health Administration).

The Program

The mission of Hofstra University's M.H.A program is to prepare men and women for administrative leadership positions in a variety of health services organizations. The 45-48 credit program is designed for aspiring and committed professionals who are interested in careers in health services administration in such settings as hospitals, managed care organizations, medical group practices, ambulatory, long-term care, and home health care facilities, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, government, for profit, and nonprofit sector organizations. Emphasis is placed on management theories and practices, policy strategies, and financial considerations as they relate to health services administration.

Effective communication skills and networking with established health professionals are incorporated throughout the program. The curriculum emphasizes competencies and values development, including:

Basic administrative skills and practices.
Applied administrative skills to health services organizations and settings.
Inquiry into health and disease issues.
Health services research, epidemiology, and analysis skills.
Health policy formation and analysis.
Creative health planning and innovation.
Comparative health systems analysis.
Problem solving and critical thinking.
Ethical behavior.
Career development and entrepreneurship.

Students with no health administrative experience complete an administrative internship at a regional health facility.

Conceptually, our program is designed with the fundamental belief that the health of populations results from the interaction among many variables, including genetic, biological, psychological, emotional, behavioral, cultural, political, economic, and environmental factors. The goal of the program is to prepare scholar-practitioners who have the knowledge and resources to create and manage health services effectively, efficiently and ethically, in order to maximize healthy lifestyles and the health status of populations.
