Program Information

Degree Offered

M.Sc.- Optoelectronic and Laser Devices

Program Description:

The course, organised jointly by the Departments of Physics of Heriot-Watt University and the University of St Andrews, provides postgraduate training in modern optics and semiconductor physics tailored to the needs of the optoelectronics industry. Graduates gain an understanding of the fundamental properties of optoelectronic materials and experience of the technology and operation of a wide range of laser and semiconductor devices. The joint involvement of the Departments of Physics at both Heriot-Watt and St Andrews Universities makes available to students the combined expertise and diversity of research equipment in the two universities. In addition students gain experience of industrial research environments during their three month research project at companies throughout the UK. Formal lectures and laboratory experiments are provided at both universities and a project is normally undertaken in conjunction with an industrial company over a period of 12 weeks. Companies participating in the course include British Telecom, British Aerospace, DRA, Edinburgh Sensors, GEC Marconi, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Sharp, Shell Research and Thorn-EMI (CRL). The course is approved by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and a number of Advanced Course Studentships are available for suitably qualified students undertaking the course full-time.
