Program Description:
The Department of Physics offers a program of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Physics. The degree of Master of Arts, awarded after the completion of eight half-courses, is frequently taken by students who continue on for the Ph.D. degree, but students are only admitted to the doctoral program. The primary areas of experimental and theoretical research in the Department of Physics are high-energy particle physics, atomic and molecular physics, the physics of solids and fluids, astrophysics, certain aspects of nuclear physics, statistical mechanics, quantum optics, mathematical physics, quantum field theory, string theory, and relativity.
