Program Description:
Building on the pioneering legacy of the Graduate Theological Union's interdisciplinary study of religion and the arts, the program is devoted to the study of art and religion in its historical, theological and aesthetic dimensions. Students pursue this study through an emphasis on the history of art and religion or through philosophical and theological aesthetics. Students who complete the program will be able to interpret the language of religious symbolism embodied in the arts and they will acquire expertise in discerning how the interrelationship between art and religion impacts history, culture, spirituality, and ritual. Our graduates are able to teach, research, and write in the areas of art and religion, especially the visual arts or aesthetics.

Eligibility Requirements:
M.A. - GRE 550; GPA 3.0; reading knowledge in one modern foreign language by the end of the third semester
Ph.D. - GRE 600; GPA 3.5; reading knowledge in two modern foreign languages by the end of the third semester.
