Program Description:
The new online, low-residency MAR degree at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary offers a Master of Arts in Religion degree in three areas of concentration: Christian Ministry, Christian Care and Counseling, and Christian Education.
This 40-month, part-time program is designed for working professionals, church leaders, administrators, educators, lay workers and those serving in parachurch ministries who cannot commit to a full-time residential seminary program. The innovative curriculum will provide graduate level theological education through a combination of interactive online classes, engaging community-building activities, and intensive one-week on-campus residencies.
The online MAR program will integrate theory with practice as students apply what they learn in contextualized ministry settings. The program will also provide a rigorous biblical and theological foundation as students learn from Gordon-Conwell’s renowned faculty. With this flexible and innovative online delivery model, students studying at a distance will receive the same Gordon-Conwell high-quality education without sacrificing their work, ministry, and family responsibilities.

1. Master of Arts in Religion – Christian Ministry
The concentration in Christian Ministry is designed to equip those who currently serve, or wish to serve, in ministry within a local church or faith-based organization. Students will learn ministry and leadership skills that can be applied in a variety of settings and ministry contexts. Program of study includes: Foundations for Leadership, Spiritual Formation, Worship, Church Planting, Urban Ministry, and Youth Ministry.
2. Master of Arts in Religion – Christian Education
The concentration in Christian Education is designed for individuals who wish to deepen their understanding and practice of education in a faith-based environment. The program of study includes: Educational Ministry of the Church, Small Group Ministry, Understanding Learners, Curriculum Development, and Technology in Ministry.
3. Master of Arts in Religion – Christian Care and Counseling
The concentration in Christian Care and Counseling is designed for those men and women who are called to walk alongside those in crisis or distress. Please note this degree does not lead to counseling licensure. Course topics include Family Systems Theory, Psychopathology, Counseling Addictive Behavior, Marital Therapy, Managing Conflict, and Helping Relationships.
