Program Information

Degree Offered

M.A.- Health Arts and Sciences

Format: Hybrid

Program Description:

Health Arts and Sciences emphasizes whole person and community health perspectives and practices. Our philosophy bridges the artificial division between the natural and cultural worlds, reminding learners to place their studies within this larger context. Graduates create studies in areas such as: social medicine, holistic nursing, integrative therapies, expressive arts, botanical medicine, nutrition and food security, ethnobotany, spirituality and health, etc.

Our students actively engage in the shared process of restoring health and wholeness to people and their communities through creating resilience and sustainability. Revitalizing self, community, and the natural world deepens commitment to health within a whole system framework and challenges learners to actively address the root causes of suffering. Such learning invites deep reflection, meaningful relationships, and the ability to develop resources needed to foster personal transformation and radical systems change.

The Health Arts and Sciences process supports learners to design their own study plans culminating in a final product and degree. Graduate degrees are usually 48 credit (four semesters) programs; some nurses may complete in three semesters. Learners join in a vibrant, eight-day residency at the beginning of each semester and work with faculty advisors to both design their study plans and then embark upon 15-week studies from home.

Our graduates become:
Wellness and community health education specialists
Women's, men's and children's health educators
Coaches, counselors, consultants and guides
Expressive arts and movement facilitators
Community educators and college faculty
Eco-health educators
Researchers and writers
Activists and organizers
