Program Information
Degree Offered
Grad.-Advanced Studies in Information and Library Science
Format: Campus
Program Description:
The management, the organization, the storage of and the information retrieval for large amounts of information, mainly in documentary form, is intimately connected with the new developments in computer science, in database technology and in telematics in general. Information technology and all its implications determine more and more the shape and the functionality of the information society. To cope with the growing complexity of the electronic society-at-large is a challenge for education and, especially, for post-academic education. Organizations (companies -manufacturing, financial...-, trade unions, institutions -scientific, social, cultural...-, administrations, societies...) as well as individuals (doctors, lawyers, scientists, teachers...) are increasingly confronted with the control of and/or the access to either very specific or general information. Know-how in this field must be up-to-date but is in constant evolution. Nevertheless, this know-how will always rely upon the technological achievements and evolutions in informatics at large (IT) but also upon the knowledge of the classical methods for information storage and retrieval, deriving from the centuries old experience and skills of librarians, archivists and documentalists.
