Program Description:
Doctoral studies focus on the preparation of fields, individually designed and developed with the guidance of the faculty mentor and supervisory committee, followed by the completion of a doctoral dissertation--a substantial work of original history. The department offers thematic strengths in socio-cultural studies, diplomatic-international history, gender studies, and environmental history. Graduate students prepare four fields of History: a major field selected from Modern Europe, Medieval/Early Modern Europe, Russia and Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa, East Asia, United States, Latin America, or Other; a research field consisting of a region, a time period, and theme within the Major Field; a minor field selected from the list of Major Fields, plus Africa; and a collateral field focused on theme and method; may be developed within History, a related discipline, or a combination.
