Program Description:
The purpose of the Master of Arts in English Education (9-12) is to support the professional development of teachers of English who contribute to the community in which they teach through effective communications skills, through understanding and appreciation of literature of diverse cultures, through understanding of the importance of critical and independent thinking, through action research, and through knowledge of and reflection on effective teaching practices and strategies, including the use of appropriate technology.
The Master of Arts in English Education program (9-12) includes thirty semester hours in professional and content area studies. It leads to a recommendation for graduate-level NC Teaching License for those who possess initial licensure in grades 9-12 English. Graduate students who do not have initial licensure may obtain the degree but not the graduate-level license. However, students must be teaching some aspect of the discipline of English in a real-world context in order to complete the requirements of this program.

Gardner-Webb University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Education program is accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Eligibility Requirements:
1. Submit a completed application for admission.
2. Arrange for an official transcript of all previous academic work beyond high school to be sent directly from each institution attended. The Privacy Act requires that each student request in writing that transcripts be released to the Graduate School Office.
3. Arrange for submission of scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). GRE and MAT scores must be submitted by the publisher.
4. Submit three professional references on Gardner-Webb Graduate School reference forms.
5. Provide evidence of "A" level North Carolina Teacher's license or equivalent, or students not holding licensure may obtain the degree but not the graduate-level licensure.
6. Submit a writing sample which is a documented research essay of 2000 or more words in MLA format. Or,submission may be appropriately documented detailed lesson plan for a unit of literary study.

International Student Requirements:
1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 500-paper based test, 173 min.-computer
based, or 61 min.-internet based.
2. WES - (Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials) - All Transcripts from institutions outside U.S. must be submitted to WES
3. VISA/ PASSPORT - F1 student visa or H1B work/employment visa.
