Program Description:
The purpose of the MA in English degree program is to offer capable students an opportunity to advance their skills in literary analysis and to expand their knowledge in literature, writing, and literary theory. The program will prepare students to be scholars who have not only mastered a body of knowledge in the field but who have also developed the research skills to be self-educating learners. In addition, a Master’s degree in English can prepare a student for doctoral studies or for being an instructor at the community college level. (Students seeking NC Teaching Licensure, either initial or graduate, should consult the Graduate Coordinator for the MA in English Education program.)
Accreditation:
Gardner-Webb University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Education program is accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Eligibility Requirements:
1. Submit a completed application for admission.
2. Arrange for an official transcript of all previous academic work beyond high school to be sent directly from each institution attended. The Privacy Act requires that each student request in writing that transcripts be released to the Graduate School Office.
3. Arrange for submission of scores Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
4. Submit three professional references on Gardner-Webb Graduate School reference forms.
5. Submit a writing sample which is a documented research essay of 2000 words or more on a literary subject in MLA format.
6. Submit a 250-word Statement of Purpose that addresses your interest in pursuing a graduate degree in English.

International Student Requirements:
1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 500-paper based test, 173 min.-computer
based, or 61 min.-internet based.
2. WES - (Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials) - All Transcripts from institutions outside U.S. must be submitted to WES
3. VISA/ PASSPORT - F1 student visa or H1B work/employment visa.
-Permanent Residents need to supply a copy of their permanent residency card
International applicants planning to immigrate to the U.S.A., submit the following:
4. Documents to Support Sponsor Financial Responsibility-Copy of most recent Bank Statement and one of the following: Recent tax return OR copies of the Last 3 pay stubs.

6. International Student Transfer Form (if coming from another U.S. institution, a copy of your I-94 and I-20 are required)
