Program Description:
Master of Science First Professional
The Master of Science First Professional degree is for those candidates without an undergraduate degree in interior design or related field. This portfolio track of courses fully prepares the student to enter the profession and enables licensure. The degree consists of a minimum of 65 semester hours of course work in which the candidate must pass a graduate portfolio review in order to qualify for degree candidacy. First professional students complete a focused research paper in addition to their studio/lecture/seminar courses.
Master of Science and Master of Arts Post-Professional
The Master of Science and Master of Arts Post-Professional degree consists of a minimum of thirty-two (32) semester credit hours. The program is intended for candidates with an undergraduate degree in interior design, architecture, or other approved related field. This degree is intended to focus on specialized research in a thesis or thesis project program of study. Master of Arts candidates must meet the university requirements for graduate level humanities and language for eligibility.
A newly instituted "4+1" program of study allows students with an undergraduate degree in interior design to finish an MS degree in 3 terms (Fall/Spring/Summer). The focus of study involves a large-scale environment selected by the student with all programming, research, design, construction documents, portfolio and presentation completed by the student. This professional track course of study also requires internship hours. For a sample of a final presentation from the 4+1 program, click here.
Master of Fine Arts
The Master of Fine Arts degree consists of a minimum of sixty (60) semester credit hours including a minimum of six (6) hours of thesis or thesis project. It is intended for individuals who may pursue careers in higher education or those who seek professional career enhancement through extensive specialized research projects and/or theses preparation. In order to maintain close faculty supervision, only a limited number of candidates are accepted into the MFA program. Final determinations are made by the faculty graduate program committee. The MFA degree may be considered a terminal degree by some institutions.
