Museum Studies Graduate Certificate

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Museum Studies graduate certificate at Florida International University is designed to prepare students for successful careers in various positions within museums and cultural institutions. The interdisciplinary nature of the program enables students to receive unique educational opportunities designed for their particular interests and skills.
Students in the FIU Museum Studies Graduate Certificate program must successfully complete 18 credit hours to earn the Certificate. Generally, it can be completed in 2 years part-time, depending upon what courses are being offered. Three core courses are required. They are taught sequentially - ARH 5850, History and Philosophy of Museums in the fall semester; ARH 5851, Policies and Procedures in the spring semester. They can be taken in any order. After the completion of those 2 courses the internship - ARH 5940 - can be taken.
The rest of the hours are completed with elective courses such as Museum Education, Curatorial Practices, Museum Exhibitions, Museum History (in the history department), and Public Administration. Courses are generally offered in the evening, as students tend to be in the workplace. Museum studies courses, except for the internship, are usually not offered during the summer.
