Degree Offered
Masters Degree in Special Education with Gifted Emphasis in 36 hours with non-thesis and thesis options. Students in the non-thesis option complete a written comprehensive examination. Students may transfer up to nine graduate credits earned at a B or higher grade that meet recency requirements.

Program Description:
NCATE approved and aligned with KSDE standards, the Emporia State University Gifted Special Education Program develops competencies in knowledge, skills and dispositions for Kansas endorsement at K-6 and 6-12 levels in 24 semester hours and the M.S. degree in Special Education with gifted concentration for thesis and non-thesis options in 36 hours.
With course work available entirely online, students complete supervised practicum experiences on the job and/or through high quality summer enrichment programs at K-6 and 6-12 levels. Special Education scholarships award and recognize accomplished teaching, collaboration, and gifted program development through tuition credit.
Outstanding program students earn multiple graduate degrees, bring decades of classroom teaching and/or administrative experience, pursue National Board certification and demonstrate passion for teaching gifted students. Most students complete the program working full-time in gifted education. Districts view ESU candidates favorably and actively recruit students who sign contracts before graduation.
Cutting edge technology including the Blackboard internet platform provides a powerful learning environment. Technology enhancements offer live virtual classroom support on IEP development, comprehensive exam review and practicum observation. Students access research materials through distance learning and online library resource services. The faculty engages students in professional development experiences at state, national and international levels and encourages professional affiliation.
