Program Information

Degree Offered

Master's of Science in Art Therapy

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The mission of the ESU Graduate Art Therapy Program is to prepare exceptional graduates who think purposefully, creatively, and ethically about the psychological constructs involved in the art making and reflection processes. We strive to inspire professional art therapists who will advance art therapy theory, practice, and research, and provide service to those in need.
The Master of Science in Art Therapy was founded in 1973 by art therapy pioneer Robert Ault. The program continues to be a national leader in art therapy education, and its international relationships have led to opportunities for students to gain valuable internship opportunities in multicultural and international contexts.

By maintaining a low student-to-faculty ratio, the Art Therapy program provides quality individual attention and helps to meet the needs of the increasingly diverse student body. Our faculty combines strengths in clinical experience with diverse populations, research skills, fine arts training, and international networking to offer students an exemplary art therapy education.

Accreditation:

The ESU Art Therapy Program has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA). This important distinction facilitates the professional credentialing process for our graduates.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants should submit a portfolio (electronic slides are encouraged) with 15 to 20 examples of their work. Also necessary for application are 1) a personal statement regarding why the student would like to study art therapy, 2) three letters of recommendation, 3) official transcripts, 4) GRE scores, 5) formal application to the university and the art therapy program.
