Program Description:

The Graduate Secondary Leading Teacher Program (GSLTP) is guided by the mission of Duquesne University, the conceptual framework of the School of Education, and state/national standards. It is designed to prepare teacher candidates for secondary classrooms in our nation’s schools by providing a caring and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence. This program satisfies the requirements for a Master of Science in Education Degree (M.S.Ed.) and initial certification (Instructional I) to teach at the secondary level in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (grades 7-12). Candidates have the opportunity to develop professional and personal competence by participating in experiences that are both theoretical and applied. They also have options to distinguish themselves through independent research and/or international study and teaching opportunities. This program consists of 36 – 39 credits and includes academic courses, field-based experiences, a student teaching experience, and four gateways.

Eligibility Requirements:

overall QPA 3.0 or QPA 3.0 for last 48 credits or overall QPA 2.80 with passing Praxis PPST 1 tests.
For second certification area, completion of 18 credits only, courses take as part of initial certification do not have to be retaken including secondary school field experience.

International Student Requirements:

Same academic requirements as U.S. students. In addition, TOEFL test (Paper based 550 minimum and internet based 80 minimum) must be taken and possibly the Duquesne University English Placement Tests and successful completion of any required English language course work. Letters of recommendation submitted by persons in authority at former university. Financial documentation showing ability to pay for education and living expenses. Student to maintain full time status. Must have major medical coverage.
