Program Description:
Duquesne University Counselor Education Program offers students an opportunity to complete the:
Master of Science in Education in School Counseling (with certifications in both elementary and secondary)
Community Counseling
or Marriage and Family Therapy
All three areas are offered during weekdays and evenings. In addition, we also offer a Saturday Studies Program.
Nationally Accredited
The master's degree program in Counselor Education at Duquesne is one of only a handful of programs that are nationally accredited in Pennsylvania. The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Program’s (CACREP) approval of the Duquesne program permits graduates to apply for national certification while in the last semester of study; this can save the graduate two years of post master's experience.
The School Counseling program requires a minimum of 60 semester hours for the degree and endorsement for the Educational Specialist I Certificate for Elementary and Secondary School Counseling in Pennsylvania.

Eligibility Requirements:
There are three steps in the process to apply to the Counselor Education Program:
1) Prescreening Materials (to be submitted to Student and Academic Services in the School of Education along with application)
Official Academic Transcripts which must show a quality point average equivalent to a 3.0 or better on a four-point scale overall or 3.0 for the last 48 credits earned including post graduate, graduate and/or undergraduate work.
For accepted applications, a letter will be sent requesting the following additional information.
2) Screening Materials (to be submitted to the Counselor Education Program only after Prescreening Materials have been accepted)
Professional recommendation form
Personal recommendation form
Resume that outlines pertinent experience (could be job or volunteer related)
Personal statement that includes the applicant's goals for the counseling profession.
3) Small Group Interview

International Student Requirements:
Same academic requirements as U.S. students. In addition, TOEFL test (Paper based 550 minimum and internet based 80 minimum) must be taken and possibly the Duquesne University English Placement Tests and successful completion of any required English language course work. Letters of recommendation submitted by persons in authority at former university. Financial documentation showing ability to pay for education and living expenses. Student to maintain full time status. Must have major medical coverage.
