Program Description:

The Master of Science program in Educational Administration provides candidates with the necessary knowledge, skills and disposition to become educational leaders in K -12 schools. Coursework involves 30 semester hours for the degree and an additional six hours necessary to meet Pennsylvania requirements for the Principal's certificate. The Principal's certificate will be issued to candidates who have completed five years of professional school experience and have earned a passing score on the Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision Assessment. A choice of venue is available to candidates enrolled in this program. These include a) taking courses on campus in traditional format, b) taking courses at off-site campus location or c) taking courses as part of a cohort group following a format combining on-campus and on-line study through the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning (CASTL).

Pennsylvania Supervisor’s Certification

This program enables a student to develop competencies needed to meet the criteria for a Pennsylvania Supervisor’s Certificate. Requirements for completion of the program will vary depending on the specific program of specialization and the candidate’s background. Eligibility for certification requires graduate study and five years of certified experience in a cognate or specialization field. Students may begin at the graduate level in any of the following cognate or specialist areas:

Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction Certification

This 21-credit program meets the requirements for the Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction certificate. A Master’s Degree in Education or a related field is a prerequisite to enrolling in this program. Certification will not be issued until the candidate has completed five years of professional school experience, logged 360 hours of field experience, and passed the Educational Leadership: Administration & Supervision Test.

Program Standards

Development of cognitive and affective behaviors in administration, leadership, management, supervision, and curriculum as they related to and are identified in the following knowledge outcomes.

1.0 The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of administration and be able to translate administrative theories to concrete situations and practices.

2.0 The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of supervision and be able to use supervisory techniques.

3.0 The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of curriculum, curriculum theory and development; and be able to translate theory of curriculum to concrete situations.

4.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of individual and group dynamics and human relations and the ability to employ humanistic qualities of empathy and respect in making decisions and in working with others.

5.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

6.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of financial management concepts, program budgeting procedures, and resource allocation; and the ability to use these in practical situations.

7.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and ability to plan and implement school programs.

8.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of educational research, design, and evaluation.

9.0 The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of technology and information systems and be able to utilize them.

10.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts of pupil personnel services and apply them in the school setting.

11.0 The candidate will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts of community and media relations and apply them in the school setting.

12.0 The candidate will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of educational law, public policy, and political systems, and apply them to school settings.

Eligibility Requirements:

Along with the Online Application, the following are necessary requirements: A minimum overall 3.00 GPA (grade point average) OR A minimum 3.00 GPA on the most recent 48 credits OR A minimum overall 2.80 GPA with a Miller Analogies qualifying score of at least 396 A resume that documents competence and effectiveness in professional work Three letters of professional reference – from either faculty members or K-12 administrators After the application for admission and transcripts have been favorably reviewed by faculty, the Graduate Office will send the applicant official notification of admission to graduate study.

International Student Requirements:

Same academic requirements as U.S. students. In addition, TOEFL test (Paper based 550 minimum and internet based 80 minimum) must be taken and possibly the Duquesne University English Placement Tests and successful completion of any required English language course work. Letters of recommendation submitted by persons in authority at former university. Financial documentation showing ability to pay for education and living expenses. Student to maintain full time status. Must have major medical coverage.
