Program Description:

Through the Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) Program, the Nicholas School of the Environment offers a rigorous online and on campus Master of Environmental Management (MEM) degree. The DEL-MEM is a two-year, 30-credit program designed for mid-career environmental professionals with a minimum of five years experience. The DEL-MEM includes an assortment of course options, driven by a broad perspective of interdisciplinary and global themes, strategic approaches to
environmental management, communication and effective leadership. This model capitalizes on the advantages of both online and traditional learning models and is comprised of courses taught through written and electronic formats, case studies, and short intensive place-based sessions. Place is the face-to-face component that gives participants the opportunity to experience the campus,meet fellow students, and interact with faculty. These sessions are held at the Nicholas School of the Environment, headquartered in the Levine Science Research Center, an interdisciplinary research facility situated on Duke University's West Campus in Durham, N.C. Students are required to attend five place-based sessions over the course of two years. Our "space" (or online) portion uses advanced interactive technologies to complement the face-to-face sessions. Students use the Blackboard platform as their learning portal to complete individual and group coursework and to participate in chat sessions and online meetings. In addition, DEL-sponsored bulletin boards,webconferences, and conference calls reinforce the curriculum, and @duke.edu email accounts are available through Duke's Office of Information Technology.
