Program Description:

The Master of Arts in Social and Cultural Studies in Education is an interdisciplinary academic program designed to appeal to students who are principally interested in deepening an understanding of the relationships between education and social justice. The program covers a broad array of educational issues related to broader political, cultural, and economic forces. Faculty in the program have a diverse focus including educational policy, media pedagogy, race, philosophy, cultural theory, gender, identity, and globalization. This program attracts future academics, current teachers, administrators and individuals with bachelor degrees who have a broad interest in educational issues and who may not be professional educators. Students pursuing this degree come from a variety of professional backgrounds involving different forms of educational work such as media, foundations, museums, community organizations, higher education, K-12 and other forms of educational work. The program prepares graduates for doctoral work for university teaching careers in the social sciences and humanities, government research and policy, non-profit work, adult education and training, higher education administration and others. The program involves heavy reading of and writing about scholarship in education, social sciences, and the humanities.
