Program Description:

The M.A. in Journalism prepares graduates for work and service in the rapidly changing profession of journalism. Stories must now be told in multiple platforms---print, broadcast, audio, video, and on the internet. Reporters must learn to conceptualize and present stories for these diverse outlets. The program emphasizes the responsibility of journalists to contribute to the informed citizenry that makes democracy and social justice possible. Students will actively engage and critically examine digital technologies in our state-of-the-art Loop Campus facilities. DePaul's journalism faculty will be joined by some of Chicago's finest and most experienced reporters and editors. Students will develop the skills to construct news narratives that add value to stories citizens see in this intensively competitive and extraordinarily promising moment in journalism's history.

The Master of Arts in Journalism requires 12 courses - three core courses and nine elective courses. The program offers concentrations in Sports Journalism and Reporting Metro Chicago.

First year courses include News Now: Journalism in the Information Age; Reporting for Converged Newsrooms; Backpack Reporting; The Social Responsibility of Journalists; Advanced Television Reporting; and News Practicum.

Other M.A. courses in Journalism include Visual Communication; Niche Journalism; Sports Reporting; Arts and Entertainment Reporting; Chicago Reporting; Business and Finance Reporting; The Press, the Law, and Democracy; Advanced Investigative Reporting; Opinion and Column Writing, and The Olympics in Chicago.

Students will also be able to take electives from other programs in the College of Communication as well as New Media Studies and Digital Cinema.
