Program Information

Degree Offered

FALCON is a registered certificate program with the New York State Department of Education.

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Mandarin Chinese Program:
FALCONs comprehensive, full-time approach to Chinese instruction is designed to build within one year the linguistic foundation, cultural understanding, and real-world Mandarin skills that students need to function independently in China. No other program offers the same degree of coverage in so short a time. If you are preparing for academic work in East Asian history, literature, or religion, a career in international business or law, or residence in China; FALCON will help you develop the autonomy needed to take full advantage of these opportunities. Join us for the summer to get a solid introduction to the language or the full year and make the lasting strides toward fluency that usually requires three or more years of traditional study.

Japanese Program:
The full-year program in Japanese consists of an introductory level in the summer, intermediate level in the fall, and advanced level in the spring. Students need not enroll in the entire full-year program to participate in FALCON. Some students enroll in the summer course to get an intensive introduction to the language, then either go to Japan or continue in regular, non-intensive courses at Cornell or at their home institutions. Students who can demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the language can join the program at non-introductory levels (fall or spring). However, because introductory programs differ widely in content and methodology, completing an introductory course elsewhere does not necessarily enable students to qualify for the fall FALCON program. Students without the necessary background are normally required to begin their study of Japanese at Cornell in the summer if they do not wish to enroll in fall or spring FALCON courses. http://lrc.cornell.edu/falcon/Japanese
