Program Description:

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism cooperate in offering a dual master's degree program in Earth and Environmental Science Journalism (E and ESJ). The goal of the program is to train graduates who have both the scientific background and the communications skills to inform the public about discoveries, processes, insights, and controversies in earth and environmental sciences, in a manner that is simultaneously interesting and accurate. E and ESJ students complete two semesters of graduate-level course work in earth and environmental sciences, a science research project, plus two semesters of coursework in journalism. The sciences and journalism components are linked through a master's project in science writing, and a unique seminar on Case Studies in Earth and Environmental Science Journalism.
