Degree Offered
M.F.A. - Music Composition for the Screen
Format: Campus
Program Description:
Columbia College Chicago offers one of the nation's few advanced degrees in music scoring for film, television and other visual media and is recognized by industry leaders as a genuine point of entry into this highly competitive field. The hallmark of this program is the personal attention students receive from experienced faculty and working music and film professionals. In a supportive environment students prepare for successful careers as composers by undertaking serious creative and technical studies, building strong portfolios, engaging in collaborative projects across disciplines, and developing vital industry connections. The path to artistic and professional accomplishment begins with four semesters on campus in Chicago's South Loop. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and embark on an intense interdisciplinary program that draws upon the resources of five academic departments: Music, Film & Video, Audio Arts & Acoustics, Theater, and Television. The curriculum incorporates all related aspects of music production - from composing and orchestration to in-studio recording and mixing - and all applications of the craft - from film and television to video game and live performance scoring. Students are equipped with all the tools they need to create distinctive music in response to a variety of dramatic problems and to present their work across multiple platforms. In the setting of the nation's largest film school, music composition students have the opportunity to develop career-building relationships with peers across disciplines. They interact with a diverse group of up-and-coming filmmakers and other students of the dramatic arts and establish meaningful professional networks which accompany them into the field. The program culminates with a five-week summer semester in Los Angeles, where students gain real-world experience in the creative, technical, and business aspects of the craft.
