Program Description:
The Department of Greek and Latin at The Catholic University of America offers three graduate programs, which lead to the M.A. degree in Classics, the M.A. degree in Latin, and the Ph.D. degree in Greek and Latin. Students interested in teaching Latin or Classics at the secondary level may also enroll in the Non-degree Teacher Certification Program offered by the Department of Education.The two programs at the master+s level emphasize the study of classical literature in its historical and cultural contexts. M.A. candidates may also choose to include in their programs course work in such other areas as ancient history, Classical and late antique art and architecture, Patristics, late antique history, epigraphy, paleography, textual criticism, and medieval Latin. Courses in papyrology, Syriac, Coptic, Hebrew, Biblical studies, Patristic theology, church history, medieval and Byzantine history, canon law, and ancient and medieval philosophy are available in allied departments.The doctoral program in Greek and Latin ordinarily follows upon the M.A. program in Classics. Doctoral students study the literature, history, arts, and culture of Late Antiquity and, if they so choose, of the Latin Middle Ages.
