Program Information

Degree Offered

Engineering and Technology Innovation Management MS degree; (Dual degree opportunities and a biocoastal option between Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley also available)

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Engineering and Technology Innovation Management MS delivers an education in innovation management for engineering and science-trained professionals interested in making a powerful impact in industry, or launching an entrepreneurial venture. E&TIM provides students with an understanding of the fundamentals of innovation and value creation, while also strengthening technical insights. E&TIM students aspire to lead technology development and engineering, create new technology-enabled ventures, develop business technology strategies, or to design policies to encourage technology innovation.

The core courses of the program emphasize the fundamentals of innovation management in theory and practice. Electives enable students to tailor schedules to their technical interests and to specific topics in technology innovation management processes, policies or organizations.

If enrolled full-time, students can complete E&TIM in one calendar year. The program features a unique schedule with a program start in January, a required summer internship, and a second semester beginning in the fall. The summer internship experience is "the ultimate elective," providing hands-on experience as part of the technology innovation ecosystem.

Students interested in studying a specific technical area in more depth may choose to take advantage of E&TIM’s dual degree program. Students spend 4 semesters + 1 summer enrolled in the program, pairing the E&TIM curriculum with one of the following course-based masters programs at Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering (CIT):
• Master of Biomedical Engineering (Practicum-Option M.S.)
• Master of Chemical Engineering (M.Ch.E.)
• Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering (M.S. in Civil Engineering)
• Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Professional M.S. Program)
• Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (Course Option)
• Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Course Work Option)

For students interested in E&TIM and software development, a bicoastal curriculum is available between Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh and Silicon Valley locations. This course of study allows students to take advantage of software and other strengths offered at the Silicon Valley campus, as well as immersion in this historically innovative region.
