Program Description:

The program leading to the Master of Arts in English features a broad-based curriculum that offers three concentrations: 1)Literature 2) Rhetoric/Composition and 3) Teaching English as a Second Language. Within a 45-quarter-unit degree requirement, students, working with their advisors, tailor their courses of study to their own interests and needs. Elective units may be taken in approved areas outside English, and a limited amount of work may be transferred from other universities. Small classes encourage individualized attentionfrom the instructors. For the convenience of students, classes are normally scheduled in the late afternoons and early evenings. Study culminates with a master's degree thesis or master's degree examination in the student's areas of emphasis. Reading and writing competencies prepare graduates for doctoral work and forcareers in business as well as in high school and community college teaching.
