Our masters degree program emphasizes materials science applications in engineering.

Currently, you will be one of only a handful of graduate students working for your advisor, receiving individual faculty guidance for your thesis. Students completing a masters degree with a specialization in materials can select specific study tracks that enable them to develop in-depth knowledge in specific areas of technology.

Cal Poly’s MS-MATE program is a project-based degree that focuses on the blending of fundamental theory with applied design. Typically, students who complete this program will move directly into professional positions and are not inclined to pursue research-based advanced degrees, such as a Ph.D. The MS-MATE program will enable students to explore more advanced technology tracks (such as bioengineering or microsystems) and requires them to complete a thesis based on an advanced applied design project.
