Program Information
Degree Offered
M.S.
Program Description:
One of the major themes of the Biology Division is developmental biology-that is, understanding how the genetic information contained in the maternal and paternal genes of a simple fertilized egg programs thedevelopment of a beautifully organized complex organism. This research uses many different organisms: human beings, mice, fruit flies, sea urchins, frogs, nematodes, and yeast, each with specific advantages for one part of the problem. A second major theme-neurobiology-covers work such as the molecular biology of membrane channels and receptors, which are the molecules responsible for thinking and learning; the development of neural connections in the developing brain; the identification of regions of visually perceived information in specific regions of the brain; and the use of computers and microchips to simulate the integrated behavior of neural systems.
