Program Description:
The PhD program in Social and Cultural Anthropology at CIIS is unique in the nation. It requires that you both immerse yourself intellectually in your studies and collaborate with communities to create a dissertation project of relevance to social change. Distinguished scholars and practitioners guide your capacity development in critical social analysis, alliance building, intercultural communication, emancipatory research, and strategic thinking. In this program, you reflect critically on inherited categories of thought to engage difference, and to think from multiple perspectives, including in postcolonial, feminist, and poststructural frameworks. As a doctoral student, you cultivate work as a scholar-activist and undertake applied and policy research toward critical advocacy for social justice. Engaging structural and historical issues in the present, you critically examine the intersections of race, class, nation, gender, sexuality, and religion.
