Program Description:

The doctoral program in psychology offers rigorous educational experience leading to the PhD degree. The first two years of the program are designed to provide broad coverage of the substantive areas of the field, training in research skill, and introduction to the substantive areasof the field, training in research skills, and introduction to the particular areas of emphasis offered in the program. During the last two to three years of the program, students will pursue specialized course work and training in one of three emphasis areas: (1) Applied Social Psychology, emphasizing the application of social psychological theory, methods, and research findings to the understanding and solving of social problems; (2) Behavioral Neurobiology, emphasizing research in humans and animals with an aim to prepare candidates for teaching and/or research careers in experimental neuropsychology and biopsychology; and(3) Theoretical/Philosophical Psychology, which emphasizes study and scholarly work aimed at clarifying the historical, theoretical, and philosophical foundations of psychology, as well as advancing the field by developing and evaluating new and currentlyexisting theories and approaches.
