Program Description:

Brandeis University's graduate program in neuroscience, leading to the MS and PhD degrees, is designed to equip students with the advanced knowledge and training necessary to conduct research in this interdisciplinary field, which combines the expertise of faculty in our Biology, Biochemistry, Psychology, and Chemistry departments. The program comprises three broadly defined areas:

--behavioral neuroscience involves work with humans in neuropsychology, with experimental cognitive neuroscience and sensory psychophysics, and with animal behavior and electrophysiology;

--cellular and molecular neuroscience provides training in electrophysiology, molecular biology, biophysics, and biochemistry appropriate to neurobiology; and

--computational and integrative neuroscience trains students in the use of experimental and theoretical methods for the analysis of brain function.

Brandeis is a leader in research in the life sciences, which provides students entering the Neuroscience Program with exciting and dynamic opportunities to work in a range of fields, from cognitive neuroscience to the structure and function of ion channels. The Neuroscience laboratories are housed within the Volen Center and the new, state-of-the-art Shapiro Science Center and adjoining buildings, and this close proximity facilitates the high degree of collaboration and exchange for which Brandeis has become famous. The strong culture of cross-disciplinary research at Brandeis is illustrated by the fact that roughly half of the total sciences faculty are housed in one of these centers rather than in a traditional departmental building and by the numerous research collaborations, journal clubs, courses, and other activities that span departmental boundaries.

Generous scholarships and fellowships are available. Successful applicants to the Ph.D. programs in the life sciences are offered full tuition waivers, a stipend, and health insurance allowance. Most of our master’s students receive generous scholarships in the form of merit- and need-based aid.
