Degree Offered

M.F.A. - Theater Arts Acting

Program Description:

Brandeis University's MFA in Acting is designed to provide the highest level of theatrical investigation and practice. The MFA program prepares talented students for a professional life in the theater. With an intention to create theater artists who will shape the future of American and world theater, Brandeis theater arts is dedicated to the transmission of technique-based knowledge, as well as providing professional-level performance experiences in the various venues with the Brandeis Theater Company in the Spingold Center for the Performing Arts. Brandeis' goal is to set the stage for a theater of the future that is alive with excitement, clarity, and surprise.

The Brandeis Theater Company is the production and performing ensemble comprised of students, guest artists, faculty and staff of the theater arts department. Through progressive and challenging programming in a unique and dynamic setting, students and professionals work together to create cutting edge theater promoting multiculturalism alongside artistic achievement. The Brandeis Theater Company offers outstanding performances and innovative production designs in the Spingold Theater Center.

The Department of Theater Arts at Brandeis University is dedicated to the principle of incorporating diversity and community in a sophisticated process of creative expression that results in plays and musical theater pieces of artistic and social significance. Through a twofold path of academic inquiry and practical artistic experience, we help students develop an understanding of dramatic literature in theory and historical context as well as in action. Students have the opportunity to experience the strength and immediacy of live theater through the production and performance of plays and musical theater pieces, including dance and movement, in the multiple spaces of the Spingold Theater Center.

The Master of Fine Arts Professional Actor Training Program encourages experimentation and adventure and stresses the development of a solidly rooted method of working, asking our actors to investigate scenes and spaces-- and their own creative impulses-- with honesty and intelligence. The program combines intensive classroom training by our resident faculty members, who are active professionals, with guest instructors. Class sizes are kept small to maximize the level of individualized attention. Please note that the program admits a class every 3 years, with the next entering class starting in Fall 2014.
