Program Information
Degree Offered
M.S. in chemistry; M.A. in chemistry, Ph.D. in chemistry
Program Description:
Brandeis combines the power of a University research program with the personality of a small teaching college. The Brandeis Department of Chemistry offers a diverse range of well-funded, internationally recognized research programs in major traditional divisions of chemistry, as well as in the increasingly important interdisciplinary areas of chemical biology, complex systems, materials chemistry, and catalysis.
Brandeis' graduate program in chemistry includes course work, seminar participation, and research, and is designed to lead to a broad understanding of the subject. The program offers the Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
The department offers specializations in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry and in chemical physics, and is poised to play an active role in the rapidly growing research areas of genomics, quantitative biology, and neuroscience, and in the increasingly important interdisciplinary areas of chemical biology, complex systems, materials chemistry and catalysis. The research opportunities are outstanding, with our home in our new state-of-the-art science center, modern instrumentation, and an excellent staff. The most recent addition to our infrastructure is an 800 MHz NMR spectrometer that complements 4 other NMR instruments in the department.
Research opportunities are outstanding in our new state-of-the-art Shapiro Science Center and Complex. Within the Complex itself, research and teaching-lab/classroom spaces exemplify the top-tier research and teaching that characterize the sciences at Brandeis and foster connections between disciplines in the sciences. Recent exciting research developments from groups in the chemistry department include new synthetic methods for practical and environmentally benign catalysis, insights into the origins of Parkinson’s disease, and the discovery of biologically relevant structure in nanodroplets.
Generous scholarships and fellowships are available. Successful applicants to the Ph.D. programs are offered full tuition waivers, a stipend, and health insurance allowance. Most of our master’s students receive generous scholarships in the form of merit- and need-based aid.
We encourage you to learn more about our program, located just outside of Boston with its world-renowned academic and scientific resources -- an ideal location for internships, research, and career opportunities. As part of the Boston Area Graduate Consortium, Brandeis students are welcome to take advantage of the curricular opportunities at several area schools.
