Professional Science MS in Biotechnology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Biotechnology is a rapidly growing sector of the United States and global economies. Its products are increasingly important in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease. The Professional Science Master of Science Program in Biotechnology at Brandeis University was developed to equip students with skills to enter and advance in this dynamic industry.

The program provides student-centered, interdisciplinary training in the biological sciences and business, drawing upon the world-class Life Science departments and International Business School at Brandeis University. The two-year program integrates laboratory training through Research Project Labs with a summer internship in an industrial or academic setting. Skills are developed step-by-step, and reinforced in multiple elements of the curriculum. Professional development opportunities include seminars and meetings with experienced workers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical research from the thriving Massachusetts life sciences community.

The Professional Science Master's Program in Biotechnology combines the teaching of current concepts in biology and business with training in professional skills and ethics. These elements are the foundations of careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The biology segment emphasizes hands-on learning in project laboratories and internships. Business courses foster team approaches to problem solving. Skills seminars focus on writing, on analyzing and presenting data, and on oral communication. Students are individually advised and mentored, and counseled on their career goals and opportunities. The program includes two years of in-residence courses at Brandeis University and a summer internship.

Professional Science Master's (PSM) describes a new type of MS graduate degree program, which combines training in both science and professional skills. PSM programs consist of two years of academic training in an interdisciplinary area, with a professional component that includes internships and attention to workplace skills, such as business, communications, and regulatory affairs. PSM degree programs have a strong connection to potential employers, who are actively involved in the curriculum design. The PSM is designed to prepare students for entry directly into a career and not as a intermediate degree to be followed by PhD study. PSM status for the Brandeis University Biotechnology program has been approved and awarded by the Council of Graduate Schools.
