Program Description:

The sociology graduate program at ASU provides advanced training in statistics, research methods and theory linked to three substantive fields in sociology: demography, family, and medical sociology/population health. In addition to these three areas of concentration, the program has strengths in cross-cutting areas of social networks, migration, social stratification, and race-ethnic and gender inequality.

We offer a unique, interdisciplinary-based program that allows students to work with faculty from across the university while receiving strong training in the fundamentals of Sociology.

We provide full financial support to our doctoral students, pending satisfactory progress, through research and teaching assistantships. Students have their tuition paid for and receive a stipend, health insurance, and dental insurance.

Our students benefit from a multi-million dollar endowment that supports various aspects of graduate education, including summer fellowships and travel and research grants.

Recent placements of our doctoral graduate students include tenure-track positions at: University of Alaska; University of California, Riverside; California State University, Sacramento; University of Cincinnati; Illinois State University; St. Lawrence University; Kent State University, Tuscarawas; Nanyang Technological University; University of North Carolina, Greensboro; University of Wisconsin, Stout; as well as research/administrative positions and post-doctoral fellowships at ASU, the University of Virginia, New York University Medical School, and the Houston VA's Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence.

SSFD Resources for Graduate Students
Graduate Student Funding:

PhD students are supported either as research assistants in which they actively participate in data collection and analysis with faculty or as teaching assistants in which they assist faculty with teaching and grading activities.
Intensive Summer Interdisciplinary Experience:

Funding is available to allow students to acquire interdisciplinary training over the summer. Recipients have used funds to intern at other universities and attend international workshops.
Cowden Quantitative Graduate Fellowship:

Provides one-year of support for coursework in advanced quantitative techniques.
Graduate Student Initiative Funding:

Funds provided to students to enhance their learning and training experience. Recipients have used these funds to collect dissertation data.
SSFD Travel Award:

Students receive support to attend conferences when they are a participant on the program.
