Program Description:

The objective of Arizona State University's Master of Science online degree program in Engineering Science with a specialization in Materials Science and Engineering is to provide an in-depth study science and engineering topics through advanced coursework and an introduction to research. Students who elect this option follow the guidelines for the Master of Science Degree but they replace the thesis/research credits with six hours of coursework and they are allowed to take up to 9 credits of technical electives from MSE 510-518 instead of only up to six. After completing their coursework, students must complete a report (typically 15-20 double spaced pages plus figures) on a topic of their choice approved by their committee and make an oral presentation to the selected committee members on their program of study.

Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) integrates fundamental knowledge of materials synthesis and processing, materials microstructure (from electrons to crystals) and materials properties (from physical to biological) of polymers, ceramics, metals and alloys, optical and electronic materials, composites and biomaterials. This knowledge is then used to improve the performance of engineered products and to design unique new materials for next-generation applications, with emphasis on sustainable development. Modern approaches to MSE focus on a fundamental understanding of the key issues in processing, structure, properties and performance that unite all classes of materials and are the basis for their intelligent use. MSE is thus an enabling discipline for all other fields of engineering and is a unique blend of the basic and engineering sciences. MSE is an ideal training for the innovative application of advanced materials in areas such as bio- and nanotechnology.
