Program Information

Degree Offered

Post baccalaureate Premedical Certificate

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Post baccalaureate Premedical Certificate Program is designed for students who have a bachelor's degree and either lack prerequisites required by health professional schools or wish to strengthen their credentials. It serves recent graduates as well as those returning to school after an extended interval. An overall minimum grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum science and mathematics GPA of 3.2 are required for admission to the Certificate program. You may apply before receiving your bachelor's degree. Qualified students in the premedical program at American University have enjoyed an 86% success rate in being accepted to medical schools.
The course of study requires approximately two years depending upon which courses were taken previously. In some cases, a summer spent taking one or two of the freshman courses and one full-time academic year would be feasible. Students may also work part-time or full-time and take courses at their own pace. The program is flexible, and prepares students for health professional schools specializing in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other areas of health care. As necessary, students will take premedical requirements: general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics. These are followed by intermediate and advanced courses which prepare students for professional examinations such as the MCAT and the rigors of the first year at professional school.
This program features extensive advising, a calendar, seminars, volunteer opportunities, and essay and interview workshops. Individual advising, guidance and assistance are supplied by the Premedical Programs Coordinator.
