Program Information

Degree Offered

MA Psychology, PhD in Psychology: Behavior, Cognition, and Neuroscience, PhD in Clinical Psychology

Program Description:

BEHAVIOR, COGNITION & NEUROSCIENCE PhD: The BCAN program provides a rigorous and flexible graduate education. Students can get in-depth training in one of these traditional areas in a largely apprenticeship style. The strengths of our program lie in our eclectic approach, affiliations with prestigious area institutions such as NIH, Walter Reed, Georgetown Medical School, quality teaching opportunities, and flexibility in training.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY PhD: The clinical track within the psychology doctoral program enables students to obtain intensive training in both research and applied clinical work. Students in the program are assigned to faculty mentors to begin learning about research design and methodology in areas of psychology that interest them. Faculty supervise students on topics such as affective and motivational processes in depression; anxiety disorders; African-American issues; eating disorders; cognitive assessment and therapy; smoking; drug expectancies; child clinical issues; sports psychology; and human services program evaluation. Students begin their clinical training in the first semester by participating in an experiential psychotherapy practicum. Their psychotherapy sessions with clients from the University Counseling Center are videotaped allowing for faculty feedback; in the second and third years of the program, students participate in psychotherapy practica based on the object relations and cognitive behavioral theoretical traditions. The program's psychological assessment sequence also begins in the first year of the program.

PSYCHOLOGY MASTER’S: The study of psychology at the master's level can either provide the basis for further doctoral-level work or prepare students for immediate employment in a wide range of careers. The low student-faculty ratio, small class size, and close supervision of student progress by individual faculty advisors provide students with a strong foundation for study in the field of psychology.
