Program Description:

The graduate arts management program trains students to become arts administrators in many art disciplines and teaches them the basic tenants of business, management, and promotion of the arts. The curriculum is designed to combine current cultural and nonprofit theory with the best practices from the management field. Arts organizations throughout the metropolitan Washington region serve as laboratories for learning and enable students to apply classroom concepts in professional settings.
Since 1974, the graduate arts management program has trained students to become arts administrators in many arts disciplines -- theater, visual arts, music, dance -- and taught them the basic tenants of business, management, and promotion of the arts. The arts management curriculum is designed to combine current cultural and nonprofit theory with the best practices from the management field. Arts organizations throughout the metropolitan Washington region serve as laboratories for learning and enable students to apply classroom concepts in professional settings.


Graduate students wishing to augment or begin nonprofit arts management studies can pursue a graduate certificate in arts management. The graduate certificate in arts management is a recognized form of continuing education. Students gain knowledge and experience in non-profit arts management, including fundraising, marketing and public relations, and Board of Director interactions through 15 credit hours of coursework.
