Program Description:

The Master of Arts in Cultural Translation is a unique initiative, the first of its kind. A recent panel at the Modern Language Association asserted that cultural translation is 'the most important concept in cultural theory today.'
The Master's in Cultural Translation takes the creativity and rigor of the practice of translation, and the energy of contemporary and historical theories of translation, and brings them into debate with other areas in the humanities and in the social and political sciences, as we try to understand and to manage and to inhabit the forms of life that are emerging internationally, trans-nationally, supra-nationally and globally.
Translators and students accepted to the program will build on the concept of negotiation of cultures through language. A dual approach to study, historical and theoretical perspectives of contemporary culture, provide candidates with a solid understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity, and international research and presentation skills. This one-year program features a focused individual mode of study with tutorial support for research and translation projects. Courses in the program focus on culture as a moment of translation, theoretically drawing from politics, anthropology, philosophy, economics, and also from historical instances of translation. The concept of translation is then applied to contemporary interventions in art and literature as well as in the international public policy sphere.
The program is ideal for students of the humanities looking to broaden the scope of their study and bring it to bear on global issues, for translators who wish to sharpen their conceptual tools and receive expert support for translation projects, and for those who wish to work in the international cultural industries.
