In our program in Urban Leadership leading to a Master of Education degree, students may pursue the degree at Alvernia independently, or in combination with an Early Childhood (Grades Pre K-4) or Secondary (Grades 7-12) Teaching Certification.

Program Description:
Alvernia University has developed the Program in Urban Education leading to a Master of Education degree to enhance the scholarly and professional development of classroom teachers. In this program, students will examine the moral and ethical dimensions of teaching in cross-cultural settings.
Make your teaching position matter by using theory, fundamental techniques, and research based best practices. This program provides both historical and current knowledge of legislation, laws and research findings, existing and emerging theory, and methods of assessment—both individually and state-wide.
Explore various roles of educators by learning about the challenges of working with students, parents, other educators, and citizens in communities to help promote equity in education. Alvernia's Master of Education degree provides professional educators with a broad-based knowledge of leadership in the field of education, whether for a educational position or for a classroom teacher.

The Program in Urban Education leading to a Master of Education is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Eligibility Requirements:
For consideration for acceptance applicants must submit the following: Completed application form accompanied by a non-refundable $50 application fee, Personal Statement, Official college/institution transcripts, Three letters of recommendation (not required for Principal Certification unless applying for the M.Ed. program with Principal Certification), Passing Praxis Scores (Appropriate Praxis Exams are required for Certification applicants.), and Academic or professional awards (not required, but encouraged).
Students enrolling in the Principal Certification Program are required to submit two evaluation forms provided by Alvernia University (one by a school superintendent and one by a school principal).
