Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology: Gerontology (MACG)
Master of Arts in Gerontological Psychology (MAG)
Program Description:
These two Masters programs are designed to provide students with a sound foundation of coursework and practical training to work with older adults. Students will be exposed to the impact of biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors on the aging process in order to gain a holistic understanding of the needs and issues of older adults. With the increasing number of older adults in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Labor projects faster than average growth in employment for individuals with a Masters degree. Completion of foundational coursework, specialized studies, and supervised training, ensures graduates are well-prepared to work in a variety of human services agencies and organizations with older adults who will have a strong appreciation for the value of psychology in promoting their quality of life.
This program is offered in two formats. The first program (MACG) is a dual-credential program (65 credits) preparing graduates to sit for Professional Counselor licensure in Illinois (LPC). In additional to providing focused training in gerontology, graduates of this program are well prepared for a wide variety of community mental health positions in human services agencies and organizations in the public and private sectors. The second program (MAG) is a 47 credit program designed to prepare students to provide a broad range of services to older adults in a wide variety of settings.
