The field of Counseling and Mental Health Therapy Mental health therapists deal with a large number of problems faced by their patients, ranging from issues as diverse as family problems, self-image issues, and work-related stress. This field demands an understanding of not only the problems affecting the patients, but also of the various methods that could be used to remedy them. Psychologists must understand people from both a clinical and an interpersonal standpoint, and their background in both practical therapeutic methods and scientific analysis enables them to understand how both the environment and the unique brain-function of their patients affect certain behavioral patterns, and therefore dictate the methods employed to help them.
