Studying in the UK can be a cost-effective option and is more affordable than you think when you consider all that the UK has to offer. Shorter courses, usually no application fee, competitive tuition fees, federal aid loans, numerous scholarships and the ability to work during your studies all present attractive financial incentives.

Here's what the UK can offer you:

Shorter courses
You can get your MA or MBA in just one year! That puts you a year ahead in your career and cuts your overall study costs in half.

As an international student you are eligible to work for the duration of your degree - part-time (20 hours a week) during term-time and full-time in vacations.

Student Discounts
Substantial discounts are offered to students across the country for entertainment like: cinema, concert and theatre tickets; travel ranging from a local bus trip to European tours; book and music purchases; banking and much more.

Health Care
If you are in the UK for six months or more, you are eligible for free health care, routine and emergency, under the UK's National Health Service.

Tuition Fees and other Costs

The basic charge at a UK university is the tuition fee which covers the cost of instruction and other academic services. The collegiate universities will ask you to pay an additional college fee, and for some programs there may be a bench (or laboratory) fee.

Tuition fees are set by individual institutions, so you may want to compare a number of places before deciding. The latest figures show that for overseas students will pay the following annual fees:

Graduate arts degree: $13,000-$17,000
Graduate science degree: $17,000-$20,000
Clinical medicine: $20,000-$32,000
MBA: $15,000-$30,000

UK institutions usually require students to pay in advance for the whole year though it is becoming increasingly common for students to be able to pay term by term.

On top of tuition fees you will have to take into account travel to and from the UK and living expenses while you are in the country. Living costs vary from one part of the country to another with London and the southeast of England being the most costly parts of the country. Depending on where you live we estimate that for accommodation, utilities, food and daily travel for a 12-month period you will need:

London, Oxford and Cambridge $11,000-$15,000
Elsewhere in the UK $10,000-$13,000

The institution(s) to which you apply should be able to give you a sense of local living costs. You should also take into account any initial expenses e.g., temporary accommodation, books, equipment, deposit on rented accommodation.
