The M.S. Biotechnology combines advanced training in laboratory sciences with instruction in the essentials of regulatory affairs, medical devices, commercial research and product development. Students learn from faculty who are experts in their field. Business fundamentals are included in the curriculum to improve management and communication skills, along with entrepreneurship training. The final capstone course provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to do extensive library research as well as written and oral presentation skills. The M.S. in Biotechnology is designed to be completed in two years, with a minimum of 6 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. The remaining coursework is completed during the summer term between years one and two. The courses are offered in the evening and online for the convenience of working students. Students have opportunities to work with the Center for Biotechnology, network with other students – including international students who bring diverse perspectives to the life sciences, and participate in internships. Several interns have been hired by their employer at graduation. A student completing the program will be prepared for positions managing R&D and product development operations within both large and small biomedical firms. Some graduates have entered careers in evolving life-sciences companies in the areas of manufacturing and operations, as well as joining healthcare and technology firms. The program has also been a foundation for students who go on to pursue medical and dental school, and Ph.D. programs. Students entering the program will be required to take courses in biology and chemistry, as well as four additional courses in biotechnology. The remainder of the 30 credits required for graduation will be filled with electives from the Bayer School graduate program and the Donahue Graduate School of Business. Courses will be selected to provide students with a customized program directed at their specialty and specific industry requirements.
