Students whose major interest is in philosophy are required to gain a general knowledge of the whole subject, including its history, and to select some aspect or subdivision of it for intensive study and research. Although there are no field wide course requirements, there are field guidelines. Each student's program of study is worked out individually in regular meetings each semester with his or her Special Committee. There are no written comprehensive examinations.
