The MAT in adolescent education program is for students who have an undergraduate degree in English and seek certification to teach that subject in grades 7-12. Students who complete the degree are eligible for initial certification (see Teacher Certification for more information).
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in English. The applicant's undergraduate work must be acceptable to the English, General Literature and Rhetoric Department in Harpur College, as well as to the Graduate School of Education. Students without appropriate undergraduate preparation in English are required to take additional credit-hours, in consultation with the graduate director in English, to be eligible to apply to this program.
The MSEd program is for students who already hold certification in English; this program combines advanced study and practice in both an academic area and in professional education, enhancing the teaching and leadership abilities of secondary school educators. Completion of this degree and other requirements leads to professional certification in New York state as a teacher in grades 7-12 in English.
