Fairleigh Dickinson offers a variety of programs, which train teachers in the use of the Orton Gillingham approach, an explicit, direct, multisensory structured, phonetic approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling. The Language Tool Kit is the specific curriculum presented. Extensive and supervised practicum are an essential component of each program.
These program's are accredited at the IMSLEC Teaching Level. The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) provides national accreditation to programs that prepare specialists in multisensory structured language education.
Dyslexia Specialist Certificate (30 credits)
The Dyslexia Specialist Certificate is a program tailored for general education classroom teachers and teachers of special education who wish to develop comprehensive knowledge and extensive experience in the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching reading, spelling and handwriting. The program provides courses on theory and practice required for effective educational intervention for struggling readers including students with dyslexia.
