The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at the University of Nevada Reno has three options to appeal to the diverse occupational goals in the field of educating English language learners.
The Masters' degree is designed for native speakers and non-native speakers of English who want to teach English language learners in a variety of settings both in the United States and abroad.
The graduate certificate in TESOL is designed for individuals who want to teach English language learners overseas or in adult ELL settings in the United States, This certificate does not certify you to teach in a k-12 setting.
The ESL endorsement serves as an add-on certificate for k-12 teachers who are currently certified or are seeking certification in a content area subject (such as English or elementary education).
The degree prepares the candidates for employment as teachers, program directors, curriculum consultants, or materials developers. Candidates for this degree will do course work in second language acquisition theories, TESOL methods and materials, language assessment, linguistics, and multicultural education. Courses are offered through the Department of Educational Specialties with additional courses offered in the English Department. The MA-TESOL program is designed to meet the needs of practicing as well as prospective teachers new to this field. For master's candidates with a state of Nevada teaching license, the MA-TESOL program will provide the courses needed for a professional ESL endorsement. The master's program is offered on a non-thesis basis only.
